A fresh egg in the center of each bread cooks while the bread bakes.

Many cultures all over the world share in the tradition of serving Easter bread at the dinner table.  I can recall as a little girl my excitement when Nonna would bring the Easter bread to the table.  There were real eggs in the middle of the bread!  Sometimes these breads are found as single servings and other times, they come to the table in the form of a large, round wreath with a few eggs strategically baked within the bread.  There are many traditional Easter bread recipes both sweet and savory that can be found online and baked from scratch.  Some folks dye the raw eggs prior to placing them in the bread.  I prefer the look of my backyard chickens' eggs left in their natural form.  Today's recipe gets a boost from the refrigerated dough section of the grocery store, making this recipe simple enough for all to enjoy.

Do you cook it with the egg in it so that the egg cooks? A baked egg in the shell? Not sure how one eats it without shells get into the bread afterwards/

Yes, exactly, the egg cooks and bakes in the shell. You can serve them at the table immediately. To eat, pull the egg whole from the bread and peel it as you would a hard boiled egg.Once cooled, the bread and eggs should be refrigerated.
