- onion sets
- garden containers (optional)
- watering can or garden hose
- plastic cover
Step 1: Plant the Onion Sets
Plant onion sets pointed-end up, pushing them lightly into the base of shallow drills. They can also be planted in containers for a small crop.
Step 2: Provide Light Maintenance
Onions need little routine care during the growing season. Keep them well weeded, but water only when established. Check them for signs of disease.
Step 3: Dry the Bulbs
Wait until the crop is ready to store, then leave the bulbs on the soil surface to dry. Cover large crops if rain is predicted; small crops can be brought under cover.
Step 4: Check stored onions for signs of disease or decay.
Don’t compost discarded bulbs since some diseases spread easily and are tricky to control.
