- pergola kit
- tape measure
- builder's square
- bubble level
- galvanized screws or bolts
- temporary wooden battens
- spray paint
- metal spike
- ready-mix concrete
Step 1: Unpack and Identify all the Pieces
Mark out the layout of the pergola on the ground with pegs and string, using a builder’s square to check right angles.
Step 2: Create the Arch
Attach each end of a crosspiece to the top of an upright post. Then, nail wooden battening between the upright posts to keep them from splaying.
Step 3: Dig Out Holes for the Pergola Posts
Mark the two post positions for the first arch using spray paint. The holes should be about 2 feet (60 cm) deep and 12 inches (30 cm) across. Fill with 4 inches (10 cm) of gravel.
Step 4: Position the Posts in the Holes
Ram the gravel firmly in place with a metal spike. Place the posts in the holes, and check that each one is vertical by holding a bubble level against each of its sides.
Step 5: Attach Temporary Wooden Battens
This will help hold the upright posts vertical while you are concreting them in. Once steady, concrete the posts in.
Step 6: Position the Second Arch
Allow for a slight overlap. Dig post holes, and check their position by placing side timbers on their respective uprights.
Step 7: Use a Bubble Level to Check that the Side Timbers are Horizontal
Be sure to also make sure the uprights are vertical before concreting the pieces in position. Repeat steps 3–7 for all the arches.
Step 8: Leave the Concrete to Set for 24 Hours
Once it has settled, screw or bolt all the side timbers in place, butting the joints together. It’s best to predrill the holes to prevent splitting.
Step 9: Screw or Bolt the Extra Crosspieces in Place Midway Between the Uprights
Check that all the fixtures on the frame are tight.
Step 10: Screw the Roof Timbers on Top of the Crosspieces
Be sure to first predrill the holes, and then secure the pieces. Leave the wooden battens in place until the concrete has completely set.
