Materials Needed

  • graph paper
  • fine-line pen
  • ruler
  • pair of compasses

Step 1: Map Out the Space

Mark Size and Position of Window and Doors on Grid

Begin by drawing the façade of the house along one edge. Use a pen and a ruler to mark the size and position of windows and doors.

Step 2: Draw the Property Lines

Lightly draw in the property lines and then the diagonal measurements. If the lines don’t match up, adjust the boundary lines accordingly.

Step 3: Draw the Position of Trees

Draw in the position of trees and their canopies using measurements taken in relation to the house and boundaries.

Step 4: Add Final Touches

Finish by plotting the position of sheds, ponds, patios and so on. Don’t waste time filling the plan with features you don’t intend to keep.
