Step 1: Clip Shoots
Water shoots that are growing through the bark or around the edges of a wound should be removed at their base; use pruners to avoid tears in the bark.
Step 2: Remove Suckers
Suckers need to be cut off as close to the base of the shoot as possible. Rub off any regrowth using your fingers or foot as soon as it appears.
