The botanical name for snake plant is Sanseveria trifasciata (pronounced san-suh-VER-ee-uh tri-fah-see-AH-tuh). (You may also see it spelled "Sansevieria.") The most likely cause of rotting stems is overwatering. Snake plants are tough, undemanding plants, but they won't tolerate soil that stays too wet. Make sure your plant is growing in potting soil that drains well. Let the top inch or so of soil dry out before rewatering. Empty any excess water that collects in the saucer under the pot promptly; don't let the plant sit in it. Snake plants will need less water in winter than in summer because they will not be growing as actively, so cut back on the frequency of watering as the days shorten in fall. Also don't feed your plant in the winter, only in spring through early fall when it is in active growth.
